Will Artificial Intelligence Amplify Disinformation? A Critical Perspective

In recent discussions, many have expressed concern that AI technology could exacerbate the spread of disinformation. The fear is that, due to AI’s capability to generate vast quantities of content rapidly, we might see an overwhelming surge of false or misleading information across media platforms.

However, I’m skeptical that AI will significantly worsen the existing disinformation problem. To put it into perspective, consider the typical experience when someone scrolls through social media—say, watching short videos on TikTok or similar platforms. Most individuals, myself included, tend to consume about 100 to 150 clips per session. Whether these videos are human-created or AI-generated, the total volume remains roughly the same. Simply injecting more AI-generated content doesn’t necessarily increase the variety or quantity of disinformation we’re exposed to.

It’s important to recognize that human-generated disinformation has already reached staggering, perhaps incomprehensible, levels. The addition of AI-produced material might add more content, but it doesn’t equate to a proportional increase in the type or impact of misinformation that influences how we interpret or respond to information. Our viewing habits and preferences remain largely unchanged; we are attracted to what entertains or engages us, which tends to be a mix of humor, sensationalism, or emotional content—regardless of whether it’s AI-generated or not.

Furthermore, the formats used to disseminate disinformation often cloak it within familiar or engaging presentation styles. For example, edited clips or sensationalized snippets—even when designed to mislead—are less obvious than straightforward lies. An example would be a manipulated video clip of a public figure, which can influence opinions subtly without overt falsehoods.

The primary challenge, I believe, is the creation of doctored audiovisual content, such as videos of celebrities or politicians saying things they never actually said. While this is concerning, I argue that, given the volume of existing disinformation and the way most users consume media—with their chosen filters and skepticism—such deepfakes or manipulated clips may not drastically change the disinformation landscape.

In summary, AI’s role in spreading disinformation might be less transformative than anticipated if we consider current consumption patterns and the nature of content dissemination. The core issue remains how we critically evaluate information and remain vigilant against manipulation, regardless of whether the content is human- or AI-generated.
