Recent reports highlight a troubling practice where a prominent AI initiative, known for its powerful language model, has resorted to using onboard methane gas generators to meet its substantial energy demands. Due to limitations of the local electricity grid, the facility installed multiple generators to sustain its operations. While methane is considered cleaner than coal, it still emits hazardous pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), which significantly degrade local air quality.

Alarmingly, these generators are operating continuously—far beyond their typical usage—within a predominantly Black neighborhood already burdened by industrial pollution and facing high rates of asthma and respiratory issues. Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to NOx can exacerbate health disparities, especially among children vulnerable to respiratory diseases.

The situation becomes more concerning considering the permits involved. Despite widespread community opposition and health concerns, the facility had to secure approvals for only a fraction of the generators operating on-site. Yet, the company has been running a much larger number—up to 35 generators—without proper authorization for months.

This practice raises serious questions about environmental justice, corporate responsibility, and the true cost of technological advancement. While power requirements for AI models are a universal challenge, the choice to operate high-emission generators in close proximity to residential areas is both ethically and environmentally questionable.
