Exploring AI’s Knowledge of Niche Internet Dialects: Have AI Models Been Exposed to Reddit’s Unique Terminology?

In recent discussions about the training data fueling AI language models, a recurring question has emerged: given that many of these models are trained on vast amounts of Reddit content, is it possible that someone, somewhere, has already been “shittymorphed”?

This curiosity led me to conduct a quick experiment. I asked the AI model Gemini to respond in the style of “shittymorph,” a popular internet slang and meme-inspired dialect. The response was both entertaining and revealing, demonstrating that AI can indeed mimic and understand even the most niche internet vernacular.

This experience raises another intriguing point: by probing AI models with more obscure or specialized Reddit lore, we might better gauge the breadth and limits of their knowledge. Are there particular memes, slang, or cultural references that remain elusive to them?

What are your thoughts? Could digging into the more arcane corners of Reddit’s content shed light on how well AI models grasp internet subcultures? Share your ideas below.
