Stay Calm About the AI Doomsday — Coding Still Requires Human Touch

The Myths of AI: Why You Can Relax About the Future of Coding

In the swift currents of technological advancement, it’s easy to find yourself swept up in the frenzy of fear surrounding artificial intelligence. Recently, I embarked on a project that involved working with two notable AI tools: ChatGPT and Claude. What began as a straightforward intention to craft some graphics for my Substack newsletter turned into an unexpected adventure—a reminder of the limitations of current AI capabilities, particularly in coding.

Initially, I contemplated using PowerPoint for this task, knowing full well that it would consume a few hours of my time. However, driven by curiosity and a dash of adventurous spirit, I decided to put the AI tools to the test and see how effectively they could assist me in creating a professional suite of graphics instead. The promise of saving time was tantalizing!

What followed was an unexpectedly chaotic experience. Every time Claude and I tackled one aspect of the project, a new set of complications would emerge, almost as if there were multiple layers of issues springing up from our efforts. Although I won’t bore you with every frustrating detail, let’s just say that my favorite descriptor for the scenario was “cluster…”—a sentiment that resonates with many who have attempted to harness AI tools for complex tasks.

After days of grappling with the AI’s shortcomings, I ultimately returned to my original plan. In just a little over three hours, I had effectively crafted a polished PowerPoint presentation. This experience led me to a realization: current AI technology is akin to a novice coder fumbling through their first project. They may show promise for the future, especially as advancements like Reinforcement Learning from AI-generated Feedback (RLHF) take shape, but they still have a long way to go.

The existential dread surrounding AI and its potential to take over coding jobs seems to be largely unfounded, perhaps fueled by sensationalist narratives or the motives of those looking to profit from fear. Instead of succumbing to anxiety over the future of AI, consider taking a moment to relax—perhaps enjoy a glass of Scotch, a couple of aspirin, or even some cannabis. The bottom line: for now, there’s no need for panic in the coding world!
