My Recent Two Weekends with Google’s AI: A Mix of Awe and Fear

Exploring Google’s AI: A Journey from Civil Engineering to Code Creation

Over the past couple of weekends, I delved into the world of Google’s advanced AI model, and I must say, it has been both an awe-inspiring and daunting experience.

A Little About Me

To give you some context, my background is in civil engineering, specifically in design and project management. I have no formal training in coding or computer science, but I recently decided to explore what Google’s AI model could offer. I signed up for a free student license, driven by curiosity to see if someone like me could effectively utilize this new tool.

My Experiment with AI

My goal was simple: I wanted to create a small application to track my projects on a smaller scale. I envisioned a tool that could provide basic charts and finance tracking while also monitoring the overall health of my projects. Although I had access to existing software that accomplished this, I was eager to tailor a solution that fit my specific needs.

Over the span of about eight hours last weekend, I engaged with the AI as if I were collaborating with a team of developers. The experience was incredibly enlightening. The model not only generated the entire code for my project but also guided me on which programs to download and how to implement the code effectively.

The Results

I was genuinely impressed by my ability to create a functional program without any prior coding knowledge. While it may not be perfect yet, it serves its purpose beautifully and aligns with my vision.

The Duality of AI

However, there is a flip side to this experience that left me feeling apprehensive. The rapid advancements in AI technology can be frightening. This model—and similar tools—are improving at an incredible pace, raising questions about the future of various professions and the extent of AI’s capabilities.

As I reflect on my journey with Google’s AI, I feel a mix of excitement and concern. In the coming week, I plan to further explore this technology by developing additional small-scale applications.

While I may not have used the correct flair for this post, I hope to encourage discussions about the potential and implications of AI in various fields, even for those of us who are not traditionally part of the tech world. If you’re on a similar path or have insights to share, I would love to hear from you!
