I spent last two weekends with Google’s AI model. I am impressed and terrified at the same time.

My Journey with Google’s AI Model: A Civil Engineer’s Experience

Over the past two weekends, I have delved into the fascinating world of Google’s AI model, and I must admit, my feelings are a blend of awe and apprehension.

A Bit About Me

To give you some context, I’m a civil engineer with a focus on design and project management. I do not have a background in coding or computer science. Recently, I decided to take advantage of a free student license for Google’s latest AI tool, motivated by curiosity and the desire to explore technological possibilities.

Exploring New Frontiers

My goal was simple: I wanted to determine whether someone like me—without any coding expertise—could effectively utilize this new technology. Specifically, I wanted to develop a small application to monitor my small-scale projects. Nothing extravagant, just a tool for financial tracking and project health assessment. Although there are existing software options for this purpose, I was eager to customize the experience to fit my unique requirements.

The Development Process

In total, I dedicated around eight hours last weekend to interact with the AI model, communicating with it as if I were consulting a team of developers. To my surprise, the AI was able to generate complete code for my application. It guided me on which programs to install and where to implement the code.

The result? A small yet functional program tailored to my needs. While it may not be flawless, it works effectively for my purposes, reflecting my vision quite well.

A Double-Edged Sword

On one hand, I feel a sense of accomplishment having created something without any prior coding knowledge. The capabilities of this AI model are truly remarkable; it feels like a powerful ally in innovation. However, the flip side is the unsettling realization of how rapidly Artificial Intelligence is evolving. The potential for these models to improve exponentially is both exciting and a little terrifying.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on this experience, I’m eager to continue this journey. In the upcoming week, I plan to tackle the creation of additional small-scale applications, pushing the boundaries of my newfound skills. Who knows what I might accomplish next?

I look forward to sharing my progress as I navigate this evolving landscape. If you have any advice or experiences of your own with AI tools, feel free to share in the comments below!
