Fear Not the AI End Times: Why Artificial Intelligences Still Can’t Program

The Myth of the AI Apocalypse: Why AI Isn’t Here to Code (Yet)

In recent discussions surrounding artificial intelligence, concerns about an impending “AI Apocalypse” have become alarmingly common. However, having spent a week experimenting with two prominent AI tools—ChatGPT and CLAUDE—I can confidently assure you that these systems still have a long way to go when it comes to coding.

What began as a seemingly straightforward project quickly spiraled into a complex endeavor. My original intention was to create some graphics for Substack using PowerPoint, but in a moment of inspiration (or perhaps folly), I decided to leverage AI for the task. After all, why not tap into the latest technology for what could be a time-saving shortcut?

What followed was a chaotic adventure. Instead of saving time, I found myself in a relentless cycle of troubleshooting. For every issue we tackled, a new set of complications would emerge. Without diving into the specifics, let’s just say my favorite phrase to describe the experience was “CLUSTER***K.” After days of frustration with the AI, I ultimately returned to PowerPoint and completed my project in just over three hours.

In my candid experience, AI tools currently operate at the level of a novice coder on their first assignment. While there’s no denying that future advancements—such as Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF)—will enhance these systems, we are not there yet. Human experts will play a crucial role in refining AI’s coding capabilities, leading to more efficient and reliable outcomes.

For now, the fear surrounding AI’s potential is largely exaggerated or perpetuated by those with ulterior motives. Instead of succumbing to anxiety over AI’s capabilities, I suggest taking a step back, pouring yourself a glass of Scotch, and perhaps even indulging in a bit of relaxation—whether through two aspirin or a bit of cannabis.

In conclusion, while we can appreciate the advancements in AI technology, it’s important to keep perspective. The real coding talent remains firmly in human hands, at least for the time being. So, let’s enjoy the journey without succumbing to undue fear.
