Exploring My Last Two Weeks with Google’s AI: A Rollercoaster of Wonder and Worry
Exploring Google’s AI: A Civil Engineer’s Journey into Code
Over the past two weekends, I embarked on a fascinating and somewhat unsettling journey with Google’s latest AI model. As a civil engineer with no prior experience in coding or computer science, I was curious to see if a novice like me could utilize this powerful tool to create something meaningful.
To kick things off, I registered for a free student license offered by Google for their newly developed AI model. My goal was straightforward: I wanted to build a simple application to help me manage and track my small-scale projects. While there are existing software solutions available for this purpose, I was determined to craft something tailored to my specific needs—mainly, basic financial tracking and project health monitoring, complemented by informative charts.
Over the last weekend, I devoted nearly eight hours to this endeavor. I approached the AI model as if I were collaborating with a team of seasoned developers. To my amazement, the AI was able to generate functioning code on command. It guided me through the process, advising me on which programs to download and where to insert the code for it to run smoothly.
The results were impressive: I successfully created a rudimentary program without any coding knowledge. While it might not be perfect, it serves its intended purpose and aligns well with my requirements.
However, this experience left me feeling a mix of awe and apprehension. The capabilities of AI models like this one are remarkable, and it’s clear they will continue to evolve and improve at a rapid pace. The potential applications are boundless, and I can’t help but wonder what the future holds for this technology.
As I look ahead, I plan to experiment further by developing additional small-scale applications in the coming weeks. It’s an exciting time, and I’m eager to see what else I can accomplish with the assistance of AI.
If you have any insights or similar experiences, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
