7. Fear Not the AI Doomsday: Programming Still Requires Human Hands
The Myth of the AI Apocalypse: Why AI Can’t Code (Yet)
In recent discussions around artificial intelligence, there seems to be a persistent fear of an impending AI apocalypse, particularly when it comes to coding capabilities. However, my personal experience with AI models like ChatGPT and CLAUDE over the past week has taught me that these fears are largely misplaced.
It all began with a straightforward project: I wanted to create some graphic files for my Substack newsletter. Initially, I contemplated using PowerPoint, a process that would take a few hours. However, in the spirit of exploration, I decided to throw caution to the wind and engage these AI tools in what I dubbed an “AI coding adventure.”
What I anticipated would be a time-saving shortcut turned into an all-out battle against an array of unexpected issues. It felt like a never-ending game of whack-a-mole—address one problem, and another would promptly rear its head. While I could share a laundry list of the challenges I faced, I’ll just say this: “CLUSTER***K” aptly captures the chaos. After several frustrating days spent in this digital quagmire, I ultimately produced a polished PowerPoint presentation in just a bit over three hours.
What I’ve gathered from this experience is that current AI models are akin to rookie coders on their first day. They have potential but are still inexperienced and prone to errors. Future advancements in AI, particularly with approaches like Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), will undoubtedly enhance their abilities. Yet, for the present, these systems are far from the coding wizards some fear they might become.
So, as we navigate this landscape, let’s recalibrate our anxieties. Instead of succumbing to the sensationalism surrounding AI, I suggest we adopt a more relaxed approach. Pour yourself a glass of Scotch, take a couple of aspirin, and give yourself permission not to worry. Who knows? A little cannabis might do the trick, too.
In the end, the fear of AI overtaking the coding world is more a fabrication of fear-mongering than a reflection of reality. So let’s embrace the journey of innovation, one small step at a time.
