Exploring Google’s New AI Model: My Journey as a Non-Coder

Over the past two weekends, I embarked on an intriguing journey with Google’s latest AI model. The experience has left me both amazed and apprehensive about the future of technology.

A Bit About Myself

To provide some context, I am a civil engineer with no formal background in coding or computer science. My work primarily revolves around design and project management. Recently, I took advantage of a free student license offered for Google’s new AI tool, curious to see how well it could assist someone with my limited technical skills.

The Goal: A Custom Application

My objective was straightforward—I wanted to create a simple application that could help me manage my small-scale projects. I envisioned a straightforward tool that could track project finances and health metrics. We already use software that accomplishes this, but I desired something tailored specifically to my needs.

Diving In

I dedicated nearly eight hours last weekend to interact with the AI model as if it were a team of developers. To my astonishment, the AI was able to generate the entire code for my application. It guided me on which programs to install and where to input each piece of code.

The Outcome

While the program may not be flawless, it functions well enough for my purposes, delivering precisely what I envisioned. The fact that I could build something without prior coding knowledge is truly impressive.

The Future is Uncertain

However, amid my excitement lies a sense of nervousness. The rapid advancement of AI models like this one raises questions about their implications. As they improve, it’s essential to consider the potential consequences on various industries and job markets.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, I plan to continue creating more small-scale applications in the coming weeks. The experience with Google’s AI has opened my eyes to the possibilities of technology, and I’m eager to see where this journey will lead me.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on working with AI tools—whether you’re a seasoned coder or a curious beginner like myself. What uses have you found for AI in your projects?
