The Reality of AI and Coding: A Cautionary Tale

In recent days, I’ve had an unexpected learning experience with two prominent artificial intelligences—ChatGPT and CLAUDE. What began as a straightforward quest to create graphics for my Substack soon spiraled into a technical odyssey that was both enlightening and, at times, frustrating.

Initially, I thought, “Why not leverage AI to streamline my graphic design process?” It seemed like a brilliant shortcut compared to developing the project in PowerPoint. The thought of saving hours was tempting, and so I embarked on this tech-driven adventure with high hopes and ambitious goals.

However, this journey quickly transformed into a challenging game of whack-a-mole. Every time I tried to resolve one issue, unforeseen complications emerged, threatening to derail my progress. Instead of enjoying a swift creation process, I found myself knee-deep in what can best be described as a “cluster headache.” After several days of relentless troubleshooting, I eventually turned back to PowerPoint, completing the project in just over three hours!

This experience has illuminated a critical truth: while AI may seem revolutionary, their capabilities in coding are akin to those of a beginner on their very first assignment. There’s no denying that advancements in technology will foster improvement, especially with techniques such as Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). However, we are not there just yet when it comes to seamless, autonomous code generation.

Amid ongoing conversations about an AI apocalypse, I urge you to reconsider these fears as largely unfounded. The existential dread surrounding these technologies often fuels sensational narratives, sometimes propagated by those looking to exploit our anxieties for profit.

So, the next time you feel overwhelmed by the implications of AI, take a moment to breathe. Maybe pour yourself a glass of Scotch, pop a couple of aspirin, or even explore natural remedies like cannabis. After all, there’s no reason to let the anxieties of AI loom larger than life. Focus instead on enjoying your creative projects, even if you end up relying on traditional methods in the end.
