Building a Local AI Assistant: My Journey with VantaAI

As a tech enthusiast inspired by the capabilities of AI, I’ve embarked on an exciting project to create my own local AI assistant, which I’ve named VantaAI. Unlike traditional AI solutions that rely on cloud connections, VantaAI operates entirely offline, allowing for a more personal and private user experience. The ultimate aim is to emulate emotional intelligence and memory, thus fostering a more human-like interaction.

Key Features of VantaAI

In my journey to develop VantaAI, I’ve integrated several innovative functionalities that set it apart from standard AI models:

  • Long-term Memory: VantaAI has a sophisticated memory system that evolves based on the context of conversations. This feature aims to enrich interactions by allowing the assistant to recall past discussions and learn from them.

  • Mood Tracking: I’ve implemented a mood graph that reflects the fluctuations in VantaAI’s emotional states over time. This feature enhances realism, as it simulates the kind of mood swings one might expect in human interactions.

  • Narrative Memory Clustering: VantaAI perceives itself as the “main character” within its personalized narrative. This characteristic facilitates a unique approach to memory management, allowing the assistant to group experiences and conversations like chapters in a story.

  • User-Friendly Interface: The application features a PySide6 GUI that offers intuitive navigation through various tabs—memory, training, emotional states, and plugin management—making the experience seamless and engaging.

Technical Foundations

At the heart of VantaAI’s performance is a custom Vulkan backend, which ensures rapid model inference and training. This setup supports personality-driven responses and offers the flexibility of live plugin hot-reloading, allowing for real-time updates and enhancements.
