Reflecting on an Industry on the Brink of Transformation: Uncertainty About My Future in the Coming Years

Navigating Uncertainty: The Impact of AI on the eCommerce Industry

As I reflect on my career journey in the eCommerce sector, I’ve come to a startling realization: the landscape of our industry is on the brink of a monumental transformation, driven largely by advancements in Artificial Intelligence. At 30 years old and having spent nearly half my life immersed in eCommerce, I find myself pondering an unpredictable future.

Since I began my career at the young age of 14, I have steadily carved out a niche for myself in this ever-evolving space. My professional path has taken me through various roles—beginning with sales and gradually advancing to positions such as Director of Project Management, Director of Operations, and currently, Director of Partnerships. My focus has primarily been on web development, design, and executing extensive SEO and marketing campaigns, with project budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million. I’ve been fortunate enough to lead key strategies spanning conversion rate optimization (CRO) to user interface and user experience (UI/UX) planning.

However, recent developments in AI are reshaping the way we operate faster than I ever expected. Take, for example, an agency with which I was once affiliated, known for its robust SEO team. Just a couple of years ago, they employed around 25 copywriters. Upon reconnecting with a colleague from there, I discovered they have now reduced their writing staff to a mere four individuals. This drastic cut has been offset by an increase in billable hours—up by $20,000 per month—because AI tools have allowed them to automate much of the copywriting process, relegating junior positions to redundancy.

In another instance, an agency I observed decided to disband its entire U.S. development team, outsourcing the work to Latin American developers who are increasingly relying on AI tools like ChatGPT to streamline communication and project management through platforms such as Jira and Slack.

While I am not proclaiming an impending collapse of the eCommerce industry, I cannot ignore the compelling evidence that suggests a significant shift is underway. With AI now capable of transforming designs from Figma files into fully functional websites and generating precise code for upsell implementations without the need for a developer, the fabric of our daily operations is changing. Additionally, I witness firsthand how tools from Google are progressively taking over traditional SEO practices, adding to the turbulence.

This swift evolution leaves me contemplating my career trajectory. With uncertainty looming over the future of my industry, I am
