My Industry is going to be almost completely taken over in the next few years, for the first time in my life I have no idea what I’ll be doing 5 years from now

Navigating Change in the E-commerce Industry: Preparing for an AI-driven Future

As a professional immersed in the e-commerce landscape for nearly two decades, the realization of impending change has struck me harder than ever. At just 30, I find myself pondering my future career path as I witness the rapid evolution of my industry, primarily fueled by advancements in Artificial Intelligence.

My journey in e-commerce began at the youthful age of 14, and since 2015, I have been working with various e-commerce agencies, progressing from sales roles to leadership positions. My experience encompasses a range of responsibilities, from directing project management to overseeing operations and forging partnerships. Throughout my tenure, I have been deeply involved in diverse web development and design projects, as well as extensive SEO and marketing campaigns. These initiatives have varied in scope, with budgets spanning from $20,000 to over $1 million, allowing me to engage with highly strategic and complex deliverables.

The integration of AI tools has enabled them to replace many junior writers, with AI taking on much of the original content production, leaving senior writers to refine AI-generated prompts to meet compliance standards.

The experience isn’t isolated; another agency completely eliminated its US development team, opting to engage developers from Latin America who now utilize tools like ChatGPT for their project management communication via platforms such as Jira and Slack.

While I don’t foresee an imminent collapse of the industry, the changes brewing are unmistakable. AI technologies are already transforming website creation, capable of converting Figma designs or mere sketches into functional sites. I have witnessed AI auto-generate the exact code necessary to implement upsell features without requiring traditional development skills. Moreover, AI-driven tools and prompt-based search engines are progressively reshaping the fundamentals of SEO.

As I observe this transformation, I find myself at a crossroads regarding my own trajectory. With the shift toward increased automation through AI, I am currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, contemplating a potential transition back into a Head of Project Management or
