My Industry is going to be almost completely taken over in the next few years, for the first time in my life I have no idea what I’ll be doing 5 years from now

Navigating Change: The Transformative Impact of AI on the eCommerce Industry

As someone who has spent nearly two decades immersed in the eCommerce landscape, I’m facing a profound shift in my career and industry that is both exciting and unnerving. At 30 years old, I find myself at a crossroads, grappling with uncertainty about where I’ll be in five years.

My journey in the eCommerce sphere began at the tender age of 14. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working with various eCommerce agencies since 2015. I started off in sales and steadily climbed the ranks, taking on significant roles such as Director of Product Management and Director of Operations. Currently, I serve as the Director of Partnerships at my agency, where much of my focus has been on web development and large-scale SEO initiatives.

Over the years, I’ve engaged in numerous projects that range from $20,000 to over $1 million, each requiring a strategic approach. My experience spans leading conversion rate optimization (CRO) efforts, user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design, and developing upsell strategies, to name a few.

However, the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our field has been startling. For instance, I recently learned that a former agency I worked with, which once boasted a team of 25 copywriters, has streamlined its operations drastically, now operating with just four. Paradoxically, their SEO revenue has increased significantly due to the efficiency AI brings, allowing senior writers to focus solely on refining AI-generated content while addressing copyright concerns.

Moreover, I’ve observed a significant shift in tech staffing at another agency, which has replaced its entire U.S. development team with talent from Latin America. These new team members predominantly utilize AI communication tools like ChatGPT to navigate platforms such as Jira and Slack, showcasing the growing reliance on automation.

While I don’t believe my industry is on the brink of collapse, the winds of change are undeniable. AI is revolutionizing the way we approach web development and SEO—tools are now capable of transforming Figma designs or even sketches into fully functional websites. I’ve witnessed AI generating specific code for upsell implementation without any developer involvement. Additionally, Google AI is progressively reshaping search functionality and SEO practices, pushing traditional methods to the sidelines.

In light of these developments, I find myself contemplating my future in an industry that seems increasingly automated. Currently, I am pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
