My Industry is going to be almost completely taken over in the next few years, for the first time in my life I have no idea what I’ll be doing 5 years from now

Navigating Changes in the eCommerce Landscape: An Industry at the Crossroads

As a 30-year-old professional who has devoted nearly half my life to the eCommerce sector, I find myself at a pivotal moment. Having started my journey at just 14, I’ve amassed a wealth of experience within various eCommerce agencies. Over the years, I’ve climbed the ranks from sales to roles such as Director of Project Management and Director of Operations, ultimately becoming the Director of Partnerships at my current agency.

My expertise lies primarily in web development and design, alongside extensive experience in large-scale SEO and eCommerce marketing campaigns. I’ve had the privilege of overseeing projects with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million, all crafted with meticulous strategic foresight. My responsibilities have included leading Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) strategies, user interface and user experience (UI/UX) planning, and developing effective upsell initiatives.

That being said, I now find myself grappling with immense uncertainty as Artificial Intelligence (AI) rapidly transforms my industry. After a recent conversation with a former colleague still on the team, I learned that their staff has been reduced to just four writers. Interestingly, this downsizing coincided with an increase in their monthly billable hours by $20,000, highlighting the growing capability of AI to fulfill roles traditionally held by junior writers. Now, lead writers primarily focus on refining AI-generated prompts to ensure they meet copyright standards.

Further illustrating this trend, I observed that another agency has entirely transitioned its US development team, opting instead for developers based in Latin America who now depend on platforms like ChatGPT to facilitate most of their communication on tools such as Jira and Slack.

While I do not foresee an outright collapse of my sector, the signs are hard to ignore. AI-driven tools are emerging that can construct websites straight from Figma files or even rough sketches. Additionally, I’ve witnessed AI generating precise code needed for implementing upsells—all without requiring a developer’s intervention. Google’s AI and prompt-based search functionalities are also progressively reshaping the landscape of traditional SEO.

As I contemplate the future of my profession over the next five years, a sense of uncertainty looms large. The automation of many roles through AI is becoming increasingly apparent, prompting me to consider new directions. I am currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and contemplating a
