How the Coming Wave of Industry Disruption Leaves Me Uncertain About My Future in the Next Five Years
Embracing Change: Navigating the Future of E-Commerce in the Age of AI
As someone deeply entrenched in the e-commerce industry for over 16 years, I find myself at a pivotal moment in my career—one that leaves me uncertain about the next five years. At 30, I’ve built a solid foundation in this field, starting my journey in sales at the age of 14. Since then, I’ve progressed through various roles, including Director of Project Management, Director of Operations, and most recently, Director of Partnerships at my agency.
Throughout my career, I’ve contributed to numerous initiatives involving web development, design projects, and extensive marketing campaigns. The scope of my work has varied significantly, with projects ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million. I’ve spearheaded strategies for Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO), UI/UX planning, and upselling, among many others.
However, the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence are reshaping my industry in ways I never expected. In a recent conversation with a colleague there, I learned that they now operate with just four writers, despite experiencing an increase in SEO billables by $20,000 each month. The effectiveness of AI tools has allowed them to streamline operations significantly, reducing the need for junior writers and enabling lead writers to focus on high-level tasks.
Moreover, another agency has fully transitioned from their U.S. development team to leveraging talent in Latin America, utilizing AI tools like ChatGPT to facilitate communication through platforms such as Jira and Slack.
While it’s not accurate to say that my field is on the verge of collapse, it’s clear that a transformation is underway. AI has started to automate various aspects of our work, from building websites based on Figma designs to generating code that implements upsell strategies—often requiring no developer intervention. As I observe Google AI and prompt-driven searching gradually replacing conventional SEO practices, it becomes increasingly challenging to predict the future landscape of my industry.
In response to this evolving environment, I’m pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and contemplating a shift towards a Head of Project Management or Senior PM role in a different sector. Although the future remains uncertain, I recognize the importance of adaptability in my career. This journey is undoubtedly filled with unpredictability, yet it also presents an opportunity for growth and exploration in the face of
