Facing Uncertainty: My Industry’s Near-Total Overhaul and My Future Outlook for the Next Five Years
Navigating the Uncertainty of a Rapidly Evolving Industry
As someone who has dedicated nearly half of their life to the eCommerce sector, the current state of my industry is both fascinating and concerning. At 30 years old, I find myself at a crossroads, uncertain about what my career might look like five years from now.
Having begun my journey in eCommerce at the young age of 14, I’ve climbed the ladder through various roles, from sales to my current position as Director of Partnerships at my agency. My experience encompasses numerous web development and design projects, as well as substantial SEO and general marketing campaigns. I’ve overseen builds with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million, managing everything from conversion rate optimization (CRO) strategies to UI/UX planning.
However, the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) into our industry is transforming the landscape at an unprecedented pace. One striking example is the agency where I previously worked. Once boasting a robust team of 25 copywriters dedicated to SEO, the workforce has now dwindled to just four writers. Their SEO operations have become more efficient, generating an additional $20,000 per month in billable services while utilizing AI to replace many junior writers. The remaining lead writers focus primarily on refining prompts to navigate copyright challenges.
Another dramatic shift I’ve observed occurred at a different agency that made the strategic choice to replace its entire U.S. development team with professionals from Latin America. These new developers often utilize ChatGPT for communication, streamlining interactions through platforms like Jira and Slack.
While I’m not suggesting that the eCommerce industry is on the brink of collapse, it’s clear that the integration of AI tools is reshaping its future. We are witnessing AI capable of building entire websites from Figma files or even simple sketches. I’ve seen technologies generate precise code for implementing upsell strategies, all without the need for a dedicated developer. Additionally, platforms like Google AI and prompt-based search are progressively overtaking conventional SEO practices.
As I observe these rapid changes, I find myself contemplating the future of my profession. With automation becoming a significant player in eCommerce, I’m currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and considering a transition to a leadership role in a different industry altogether.
The journey ahead may be uncertain, but one thing is clear: the evolving landscape of my industry compels us to adapt and embrace new possibilities. The future may hold unexpected challenges, but it
