Navigating Change: The Future of the eCommerce Industry in the Age of AI
As I reflect on the trajectory of the eCommerce sector I’ve called home for nearly two decades, I find myself in an unprecedented situation—uncertain about where I will be in five years.
At 30, my journey in this industry began when I was just 14 years old. My professional path started in sales, gradually advancing through various roles within eCommerce agencies. Over the years, I’ve taken on significant positions, including Director of Project Management (PM), Director of Operations, and my current role as Director of Partnerships. My expertise primarily spans web development, design, and leading expansive SEO campaigns, with project budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million. I have orchestrated everything from conversion rate optimization (CRO) strategies to user interface and experience (UI/UX) planning, as well as upsell methodologies.
However, the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence is reshaping our industry in ways I hadn’t foreseen. A striking example includes a past agency where I was once part of a robust team of 25 copywriters dedicated to SEO. A recent conversation with a friend still employed there revealed a drastic reduction in their copywriting staff, now just four writers. Interestingly, their SEO department is generating $20,000 more in billable revenue each month than in my tenure. The shift to AI has allowed them to replace many junior writers, enabling lead writers to focus on refining AI-generated content to circumvent copyright challenges.
The trend does not stop there. Another agency reduced its entire US development team, opting instead for a team based in Latin America, who now leverage ChatGPT for most of their project communications through platforms like Jira and Slack.
While I am not suggesting that my industry is on the brink of collapse, it is evident that a transformation is underway. AI technologies are adeptly constructing websites from Figma designs and even hand-drawing sketches. I’ve witnessed AI create code packages that implement upsell strategies with minimal human input. Trends such as Google’s advancements in AI and the evolving landscape of prompt-based searches are significantly impacting traditional SEO practices right before our eyes.
As I consider the future, I find myself evaluating new possibilities within my career. I am currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and contemplating a transition back into a senior management role, potentially in a different field altogether. The landscape is shifting, and while challenges persist, I see opportunities weaving through
