Version 408: Facing Uncertainty: How Automation Will Transform My Industry and My Future Plans
Navigating the Evolving E-commerce Landscape: Embracing Change Amidst Automation
As someone who has dedicated nearly half of my life to the e-commerce industry, I find myself at a crossroads, facing uncertainties about the future of my career. At 30 years old, I have witnessed the evolution of this dynamic field, from my early days in sales to my current role as Director of Partnerships at an agency. However, recent developments in artificial intelligence are reshaping the industry more rapidly than I ever anticipated.
Since entering the e-commerce space at the tender age of 14, I’ve held various strategic positions, including Director of PM and Director of Operations. My experience encompasses diverse projects, where I’ve overseen web development, design initiatives, and large-scale marketing campaigns with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million. These experiences have equipped me with a wealth of knowledge in conversion rate optimization, user interface planning, and various upselling strategies.
Yet, the tide is changing. The rise of AI is making significant inroads into sectors of my industry, altering how businesses operate. A recent conversation with a former colleague shed light on the drastic changes within an agency I had previously worked for. Once fortified by a robust team of 25 copywriters, their SEO department has since dwindled to just four writers—yet their billable sessions have notably increased. AI has enabled the replacement of junior writers, allowing lead copywriters to focus on refining prompts that navigate copyright challenges.
Similarly, another agency I’m aware of has taken a step further by entirely replacing its U.S. development team with talent from Latin America, capitalizing on AI tools like ChatGPT for communication tasks within platforms such as JIRA and Slack.
I am not suggesting that the industry is heading for a collapse; rather, it is undergoing a transformation that cannot be ignored. The advent of AI tools capable of constructing websites from design files, generating code for upsell functionalities, and optimizing SEO strategies in real-time is a clear indication of the direction we are headed.
As I observe these developments, I face a profound uncertainty about the next five years of my career. The automation brought by AI begs the question: What roles will remain relevant, and how can I best position myself for future opportunities? To that end, I am pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification while contemplating a potential shift back into a Head of PM or Senior PM role in a different industry altogether.
While the landscape is undoubtedly complex,
