Version 380: How Emerging Technologies Will Reshape My Industry and Leave Me Unsure About the Next Five Years
Navigating an Uncertain Future in eCommerce: The Rise of AI
As someone who has dedicated over half of my life to the eCommerce industry, I find myself grappling with a profound sense of uncertainty about the future. At 30 years old, after 16 years entrenched in this dynamic field, I am now facing the reality that my industry is rapidly evolving and, in many ways, transforming beyond recognition.
Since embarking on my professional journey at the age of 14, I’ve climbed the ranks from a sales role into a position as the Director of Partnerships at my current agency. My experience spans various roles, including Director of Project Management and Director of Operations. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to engage in numerous web development and design projects, large-scale SEO efforts, and extensive eCommerce marketing campaigns with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million. My responsibilities have encompassed customer relationship optimization (CRO), UI/UX planning, and strategizing upsell opportunities.
However, the landscape of eCommerce is undergoing seismic changes, primarily driven by artificial intelligence. The speed at which AI is infiltrating our industry is astonishing—much quicker than I ever anticipated. For instance, a former agency I collaborated with had a dedicated team of 25 copywriters before 2021. A recent conversation with a friend who still works there revealed a stark reduction in their workforce; they have now downsized to just four writers. Remarkably, the agency’s SEO capabilities are generating $20,000 more in monthly billings than they were when I was involved. The landscape has shifted significantly, allowing AI to take over many of the roles previously held by junior writers, with senior staff primarily focused on refining AI-generated content to pass copyright checks.
Moreover, I’ve observed similar trends at another agency where the entire U.S. development team has been replaced by developers from Latin America. These new team members often communicate using ChatGPT to manage tasks through platforms like Jira and Slack, demonstrating a substantial shift in operational dynamics.
While I am not suggesting that my industry is on the brink of collapse, it is clear that significant changes are on the horizon. AI tools are advancing to the point where they can build websites from design files or even simple sketches. I have witnessed AI generate specific code to implement upsells without any developer’s involvement. Additionally, the rise of Google AI and prompt-based search mechanisms is reshaping traditional SEO practices in real-time.
