The Future of My Industry: Facing Uncertainty as It Nears Total Transformation in the Coming Years

Title: Navigating the Future: The Impact of AI on the eCommerce Industry

As I look ahead to the next few years, uncertainty looms over my career in the eCommerce sector—a field I’ve dedicated almost two decades of my life to. At 30 years old, I find myself reflecting on a journey that began at the age of 14 and has since evolved from sales roles to my current position as the Director of Partnerships at a prominent agency. However, the rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence are reshaping my industry, leaving me contemplating what my professional landscape will look like in five years.

Having a background focused on web development, design, and large-scale marketing initiatives has provided me with a robust skill set. My experience spans a wide range of projects, with budgets varying from $20,000 to over $1 million. Throughout these endeavors, I’ve spearheaded strategies in conversion rate optimization (CRO), user interface and user experience (UI/UX) planning, and upsell tactics—areas that are now being challenged by the growing capabilities of AI.

The pace of change is astonishing. A recent conversation with a former colleague highlighted striking developments: an agency I once worked at, which boasted a team of 25 copywriters prior to 2021, has trimmed its staff to just four. Remarkably, the agency now sees a significant increase in billable work within their SEO department. This shift is largely due to the adoption of AI, which allows senior writers to edit and refine content generated by AI tools rather than start from scratch.

Similarly, another agency has replaced its entire U.S. development team with developers from Latin America who utilize AI programs like ChatGPT to streamline communication and task management through platforms like Jira and Slack.

While I don’t believe the eCommerce industry is on the brink of collapse, the transformation is undeniable. AI has begun crafting websites from mere Figma files and sketches, while simultaneously generating essential code to implement upsell features independently of traditional developers. Observing the transition from conventional SEO practices to AI-driven methodologies in real-time is both fascinating and unsettling.

As I navigate these changes, I’m actively pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and contemplating a career shift back to a Head of Project Management or Senior Project Management role in a different industry altogether. The trajectory of my current field raises questions about future opportunities, but one thing is clear: adaptability will be key.
