Navigating the Future: The Impact of AI on the eCommerce Landscape
As I reflect on my 16-year journey in the eCommerce industry, I find myself at a crossroads, grappling with a future that feels increasingly uncertain. At 30 years old, my career has been shaped by a diverse array of roles—from sales to my current position as Director of Partnerships at my agency. Yet, the rapid advancement of AI is prompting a fundamental shift in the very fabric of the industry I know so well.
A Career in eCommerce: A Brief Overview
I’ve been immersed in the world of eCommerce since I was just 14. Over the years, I’ve climbed the ranks through my work with various agencies, eventually taking on roles such as Director of Project Management and Director of Operations. Throughout this time, I’ve been involved in significant web development and design projects, managing expansive SEO and marketing campaigns with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million. My experience spans leading conversion rate optimization (CRO) strategies, user interface/user experience (UI/UX) design, and upsell initiatives.

A disconcerting trend I recently caught wind of involved a former colleague who revealed that their agency’s SEO team, once boasting 25 dedicated copywriters, had dwindled to just four. Remarkably, the agency’s billable hours have increased by $20,000 per month, largely due to the integration of AI tools that can efficiently take over many tasks previously managed by junior staff.

What Lies Ahead?
While I don’t foresee the collapse of my industry, the indicators are clear: AI technology is reshaping eCommerce at an alarming pace. We are witnessing AI programs that can create websites directly from Figma files or even basic sketches. There are tools available that provide the exact coding required to implement sophisticated upsell tactics—without any need for a developer’s expertise. Additionally, Google’s AI-powered algorithms and prompt-based search functions are gradually replacing traditional SEO methods.
As I observe these changes unfold, I am left contemplating the implications for my future in this field. I’m currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (
