Potential Disruption Ahead: Facing Uncertainty as My Industry Transforms Over the Next Few Years

The Impact of AI on the eCommerce Landscape: A Personal Reflection

As I navigate my journey in the eCommerce industry, I’m witnessing a seismic shift that is causing me to rethink my future. For the first time in my life, I find myself uncertain about where I’ll be in five years.

At 30 years old, my career in eCommerce began at the young age of 14. Over the years, I have climbed the ranks within various eCommerce agencies since 2015, starting in sales and eventually stepping into roles like Director of Project Management, Director of Operations, and now, Director of Partnerships. My work has primarily focused on web development, design projects, and extensive SEO campaigns, with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over a million dollars. Throughout this journey, I’ve been involved in strategic initiatives such as conversion rate optimization (CRO), user interface/user experience (UI/UX) planning, and upselling strategies.

However, the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence has dramatically altered the landscape of my industry, far quicker than I ever anticipated. A case in point: at a previous agency I worked for, our SEO team comprised 25 talented copywriters before 2021. Recently, I caught up with a former colleague from that agency and was surprised to learn they now have just four writers. Despite this significant cut, the agency’s SEO department is generating $20,000 more in billable services than during my tenure. The increasing reliance on AI technology allows them to replace many junior writers, as the lead writers now primarily focus on refining prompts to avoid copyright issues.

In another organization, I learned that the entire U.S. development team was replaced with developers from Latin America who predominantly rely on tools like ChatGPT for their communications on platforms like Jira and Slack. This transition exemplifies how AI is enabling significant efficiencies but at the potential cost of jobs in the field.

While I’m not suggesting the eCommerce sector is on the verge of collapse, the impending changes are hard to ignore. AI is already capable of generating websites from design files or even simple sketches, and I’ve witnessed it produce precise coding for implementing upsells without the need for a developer. Moreover, the emergence of Google AI and prompt-driven search is steadily reshaping traditional SEO practices.

As I look ahead, I find myself contemplating the future of my industry, which seems increasingly automated by AI technologies. In light of these developments, I am currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and
