Navigating the Unknown: Reflecting on My Five-Year Outlook Amidst Industry Shifts
Navigating Change: The Unpredictable Future of eCommerce in the Age of AI
As someone deeply entrenched in the eCommerce sector, I find myself reflecting on an unprecedented shift that seems poised to reshape our industry in the next few years. At 30 years old, and with a career in eCommerce that began when I was just 14, I have experienced significant transformations within this landscape. Having climbed the professional ladder from sales to my current role as Director of Partnerships, I’ve overseen everything from large-scale web development projects to intricate SEO initiatives.
Throughout my career, I’ve been involved in projects with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million. My responsibilities have spanned various domains, including Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO), user interface and user experience (UI/UX) planning, and upsell strategies. However, the rapid onset of AI technology in our field has introduced an air of uncertainty that I’ve never encountered before.

Yet, despite this reduction, the agency’s SEO department is generating $20,000 more in billable hours than during my time there. The integration of AI has allowed them to replace many entry-level writers, relying on seasoned professionals to tweak AI-generated content for compliance with copyright regulations.
Additionally, another agency has completely overhauled its workforce by letting go of its entire US-based development team, opting instead for developers in Latin America who predominantly use ChatGPT for project management communication via platforms like Jira and Slack.
While I’m not suggesting that my industry is on the brink of collapse, it’s clear that AI tools are streamlining processes in ways we never anticipated. From generating websites directly from Figma designs to producing complex code for upsell functionalities without needing a developer, the capabilities of AI are rapidly evolving. As I observe Google’s AI and prompt-driven searches transforming traditional SEO approaches, I can’t help but feel a mix of admiration and trepidation.
With this evolution in mind, I find myself in a state of contemplation regarding the future. As I work towards obtaining my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, I’m also considering pivoting my career back into a Head of Project Management or Senior PM role, potentially within a different
