My Industry is going to be almost completely taken over in the next few years, for the first time in my life I have no idea what I’ll be doing 5 years from now

Navigating Change in the E-commerce Industry: My Journey Amidst AI Disruption

As a 30-year-old professional in the eCommerce sector, I’ve dedicated nearly half my life to this dynamic industry, starting my journey at the age of 14. Over the past decade and a half, I’ve built a career that evolved through various roles, including sales, Director of Project Management, Director of Operations, and currently, Director of Partnerships at an eCommerce agency.

My focus has primarily been on web development, design projects, and large-scale SEO marketing campaigns. Throughout my career, I’ve participated in projects ranging from modest budgets of $20,000 to substantial investments exceeding $1 million, tackling everything from conversion rate optimization (CRO) strategy and user interface/user experience (UI/UX) planning to upselling strategies.

However, the landscape of my industry is changing more rapidly than I could have ever anticipated, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) becoming a significant force. Reflecting on my previous agency, where we once employed 25 copywriters dedicated to SEO before 2021, I was taken aback when I learned they now operate with only four writers. Remarkably, their SEO department generates $20,000 more in billable work monthly compared to when I was part of the team. This shift underscores AI’s ability to replace many entry-level positions by enabling lead writers to optimize AI-generated content to avoid any copyright issues.

Additionally, I’ve noted a similar trend at another agency, which disbanded its entire U.S.-based development team in favor of Latin American developers who now utilize tools like ChatGPT for communication via platforms like Jira and Slack.

While I don’t foresee an imminent collapse of the industry, it’s clear that the integration of AI is transforming the eCommerce landscape. High-level AI tools are capable of constructing websites directly from Figma designs or even hastily drawn sketches. I’ve witnessed AI generate precise code for implementing upselling strategies, virtually removing the need for human developers. Observing Google’s AI advancements and the rise of prompt-based search has further illustrated the seismic shift away from traditional SEO practices.

As I contemplate the next five years in an industry that seems poised for widespread automation, I find myself reassessing my career trajectory. I am currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and considering a transition into a Head of Project Management or Senior PM role within a completely different field. Uncertainty clouds my path as I navigate these unprecedented changes, but one thing is
