How My Industry Will Transform Completely in the Coming Years — And My Uncertain Future Beyond

Navigating Uncertainty: My Journey in the E-Commerce Industry Amidst the Rise of AI

As I look towards the future, I am filled with a mix of curiosity and apprehension regarding the rapid transformations occurring within my industry. At 30 years old, I’ve spent almost my entire life immersed in the world of e-commerce, a journey that began when I was just 14. Over the past sixteen years, I have progressed through various roles in e-commerce agencies, fromSales to my current position as Director of Partnerships.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to engage in web development and design projects, alongside sizeable SEO and e-commerce marketing campaigns. The budgets for the projects I’ve managed have ranged from $20,000 to over $1 million, encompassing complex strategies spanning conversion rate optimization (CRO), user interface/user experience (UI/UX) design, and upselling tactics.

However, the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is fundamentally altering the landscape of my industry in ways I did not foresee. For instance, a former agency I was part of that boasted a robust SEO team of 25 copywriters has now diminished to just four. A recent conversation with a friend still employed there revealed that, ironically, their revenue has grown by $20,000 per month despite this dramatic reduction in personnel. AI has empowered the agency to replace many junior writers, with senior staff focusing on fine-tuning prompts to navigate copyright regulations.

In another scenario, an agency has entirely restructured its development team, outsourcing to developers in Latin America who utilize AI tools like ChatGPT for most of their communication through platforms like Jira and Slack.

While I don’t believe my industry is on the brink of collapse, it is evident that a significant shift is underway. AI’s capabilities are advancing quickly; tools now exist that can seamlessly transform a Figma design or even a hand-drawn sketch into a fully-formed website. Moreover, AI can autonomously generate the necessary code to implement upselling features without any developer input, while Google’s evolving AI systems threaten to redefine traditional SEO strategies.

As I witness these changes unfold, I find myself at a crossroads regarding my professional future. The prospect of a fully automated industry raises many questions. To adapt, I have begun pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and am contemplating a return to a Head of Project Management or Senior Project Manager position in a different industry altogether.

While I may not be certain where my journey will lead next, it’s
