Navigating an Uncertain Future: The Impact of AI on the E-Commerce Industry
As someone who has dedicated nearly half of my life to the e-commerce sector, the impending transformation within the industry is nothing short of daunting. At 30 years old, I began my journey in e-commerce at the young age of 14. Since then, I have climbed the ranks, starting in sales and eventually taking on roles such as Director of Project Management and Director of Operations. Currently, I serve as the Director of Partnerships at my agency, where I focus on web development, design projects, and large-scale marketing campaigns.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of leading various projects, with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million. My responsibilities have encompassed conversion rate optimization (CRO), user interface and user experience (UI/UX) planning, and crafting upsell strategies, among others.

Remarkably, they are still generating $20,000 more in billable services each month than they did a couple of years ago. This transformation underscores the rise of AI, which is stepping in to take the place of many junior writers, enabling senior staff to focus on fine-tuning AI-generated outputs to ensure they comply with copyright regulations.
In another agency setting, the entire US development team has been replaced by developers from Latin America, who now rely heavily on AI tools like ChatGPT for managing communication through platforms like Jira and Slack.
While I do not foresee an outright collapse of the industry, the trail of automation is evident. AI is increasingly capable of creating websites directly from designs and even generating code to facilitate upsells without the need for developers. Moreover, the evolution of Google’s AI and prompt-based search technology is reshaping the landscape of SEO as we know it.
As I contemplate this rapidly changing environment, I find myself uncertain about where the next five years will take me. The emergence of AI tools is not merely a trend but a fundamental shift in how we operate within the sector. In light of these developments, I am pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and considering a transition back into a senior project management role—perhaps even in a different industry.
One thing is clear: the future is indeed unpredictable, and the
