How AI and Automation Are Transforming My Industry, Leaving Me Uncertain About My Future in Five Years
Navigating Change in E-Commerce: Embracing the Future of AI and Automation
As an individual who has dedicated nearly half of their life to the e-commerce industry, the rapid evolution driven by artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked both intrigue and apprehension. At 30 years old, I find myself standing at a crossroads, contemplating what my career trajectory will look like five years from now—an outlook that feels more uncertain than ever.
My journey in the e-commerce realm began at the tender age of 14. Since 2015, I have honed my skills working alongside various e-commerce agencies, starting in sales and progressing to leadership roles such as Director of Project Management, Director of Operations, and my current position as Director of Partnerships. My focus has predominantly been on web development and design projects, alongside executing large-scale SEO and e-commerce marketing campaigns. Over the years, I’ve overseen projects ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million, crafting strategies in Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO), user interface/user experience (UI/UX), and upsell techniques.

A telling indication of this shift came during a recent conversation with a former colleague at an agency known for its SEO prowess. Once boasting a team of 25 copywriters, the agency has recently cut back to just four. Remarkably, their SEO department is now generating $20,000 more per month in billable hours compared to when I was last involved. The majority of junior writing tasks are being seamlessly replaced by AI, with lead writers ensuring compliance with copyright laws.
Moreover, another agency I am familiar with has disbanded its entire U.S. development team, opting instead for talent in Latin America. These new team members are now relying heavily on AI communication tools like ChatGPT for their project management interactions via Jira and Slack.
While I am not suggesting that our industry is on the brink of collapse, it is clear that the influx of AI is transforming the operational fabric of e-commerce. With AI capable of generating websites directly from Figma designs or even sketches, and new tools able to produce intricate coding solutions for upsells without a developer’s input, the implications are profound. I am witnessing firsthand how AI-driven technologies are reshaping traditional SEO practices in real time.
As I assess the unfolding scenario, I find myself grappling with uncertainty. It has prompted me to pursue my Project Management Professional (
