Navigating the Future of eCommerce: A Personal Reflection on AI’s Impact
As I reflect on my career in the eCommerce sector, I find myself at a crossroads that has made me question the future of our industry. At 30 years old, I’ve dedicated over half my life to this field, starting my journey in eCommerce at the young age of 14. My experience spans from entry-level sales to pivotal managerial positions, including Director of Project Management, Director of Operations, and presently, Director of Partnerships at my current agency.
Throughout my career, I have been deeply involved in web development and design projects, as well as orchestrating extensive SEO strategies and eCommerce marketing campaigns. The projects I’ve led have ranged from modest $20,000 builds to ambitious initiatives exceeding $1 million, often with highly strategic scopes. I’ve been at the forefront of conversion rate optimization, user interface and experience planning, and upselling strategies.
However, something unprecedented is unfolding in my industry—Artificial Intelligence is reshaping our landscape more rapidly than I ever expected. For instance, a former agency I worked with that once boasted a team of 25 copywriters prior to 2021 has drastically reduced its workforce to just four writers. Remarkably, their SEO department has seen a significant increase in billable hours, thriving on AI advancements that allow them to replace many junior copywriters entirely. The remaining writers are focusing on enhancing AI-generated prompts to ensure compliance with copyright standards.
In another instance, an agency made the bold move to dismiss their entire US development team, replacing them with developers from Latin America who lean on tools like ChatGPT for communication via platforms like Jira and Slack. This trend underscores a growing reliance on AI-driven solutions, which brings both opportunities and challenges.
While I don’t foresee an outright collapse of my industry, it’s evident that drastic changes are on the horizon. AI capabilities are evolving to the point where they can construct websites directly from Figma files or sketches and even generate the precise code necessary for implementing upsells—all without developer intervention. Additionally, I am witnessing a seismic shift in SEO practices as Google AI and prompt-based searches gain ground, overtaking traditional methodologies in real-time.
As I look ahead, I find myself contemplating the trajectory of my career. The idea of a completely automated eCommerce sector fills me with uncertainty. Currently, I am pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and weighing the possibility of transitioning back into a Head of Project Management or
