Navigating Uncertainty in the eCommerce Industry: The Impact of AI
As someone who has devoted the majority of my professional life to the realm of eCommerce, I find myself grappling with an unprecedented sense of uncertainty about the future of my career. At 30 years old, I’ve been immersed in this field since I was a teenager, starting my journey at the age of 14. Over the years, I’ve climbed the corporate ladder through various roles, from Director of Project Management to Director of Operations, and most recently, Director of Partnerships at my current agency.
My expertise primarily lies in web development, design projects, and executing large-scale SEO and eCommerce marketing strategies. Throughout my career, I’ve been involved in projects with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million, overseeing complex and strategic initiatives such as Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO), User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) planning, and various upsell strategies.

Upon catching up with a friend still on staff, I learned that this number has drastically dwindled to just four writers. Despite this reduction, their SEO department now generates an additional $20,000 in billable income each month. The introduction of AI has enabled the replacement of many junior copywriters, with only the lead writers remaining to refine AI-generated content to ensure compliance with copyright standards.
Similarly, at another agency, the entire U.S.-based development team was replaced by a team in Latin America that now relies heavily on ChatGPT for communication via platforms like Jira and Slack.
While I do not foresee an imminent collapse of the industry, the trajectory is clear: Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing how we operate. Innovative AI tools are capable of developing websites directly from Figma files or even sketches, and I have witnessed the technology generate precise code for executing upsells without any developer involvement. Furthermore, the shift towards AI-driven solutions is redefining traditional SEO practices in real-time.
As I navigate this landscape, I am left contemplating my professional future. I am currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and considering a shift towards a Head of Project Management or Senior Project Manager role in a different industry. While the path ahead remains uncertain, one thing is clear: the
