Navigating Change in the E-Commerce Landscape: A Personal Reflection
As someone who has dedicated their career to the e-commerce industry, the rapid evolution of technology is both exciting and daunting. At just 30 years old, I’ve spent over half my life—since the age of 14—immersed in e-commerce, gradually progressing through various roles. Beginning in sales back in 2015, I’ve gained experience in positions such as Director of Project Management, Director of Operations, and currently, Director of Partnerships at my agency.
Throughout my career, I’ve contributed to high-stakes projects in web development, design, and extensive SEO campaigns. The scale of these builds has varied significantly, ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million, coupled with intricate project scopes. My responsibilities have spanned conversion rate optimization (CRO) strategies, user interface and user experience (UI/UX) planning, and upselling strategies.
However, the landscape is changing faster than I could have imagined, primarily due to the impact of Artificial Intelligence. For instance, I recently caught up with a friend at a former agency, known for its robust SEO services, where the team of 25 copywriters has dwindled to just four. Surprisingly, despite this reduction, the SEO department is generating $20,000 more in billable services each month. The power of AI allows them to compensate for junior roles, relying on advanced algorithms to handle much of the writing and only necessitating the expertise of senior writers for tweaks and revisions.
Moreover, another agency I’m familiar with has replaced its entire U.S. development team with developers from Latin America, who regularly utilize tools like ChatGPT for communication and project management, streamlining processes through applications like Jira and Slack.
While I don’t foresee a complete downturn for the e-commerce sector, the trajectory is undeniable. AI technologies are already capable of generating websites from Figma designs or even basic sketches, and I’ve witnessed AI create precise code for implementing upsells without any need for developer input. With Google AI and prompt-based search solutions continuously evolving, traditional SEO practices are being reshaped before our very eyes.
This seismic shift has left me contemplating what my future in this industry holds. As I pursue my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, I’m considering a transition into a Head of Project Management or Senior Project Management role, potentially in a completely different field. While the road ahead is uncertain, it’s evident that the environment around us is changing
