Facing Unprecedented Change: The Future of My Industry and Uncertainty About My Path Ahead
Navigating an Uncertain Future: The Impact of AI on the eCommerce Industry
As I reflect on my career in eCommerce, I find myself facing an unprecedented challenge: the impending transformation of my industry due to artificial intelligence. At 30 years old, with a decade and a half of experience in this space, I am grappling with uncertainty about my professional path over the next five years.
Since I began working in eCommerce at just 14, my journey has taken me through various roles in different agencies, spanning from a sales position to my current role as Director of Partnerships. Throughout these years, I’ve contributed to numerous projects, particularly in web development, design, and large-scale SEO initiatives. The projects I’ve led have had budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million, encompassing complex strategies in conversion rate optimization (CRO), user interface/user experience (UI/UX) planning, and upselling tactics.
However, the rise of AI is reshaping our industry faster than I had anticipated. For instance, in an agency where I previously worked, the number of SEO copywriters has dwindled dramatically—from 25 before 2021 to just 4 today. This reduction is attributed to the agency’s newfound ability to leverage AI tools, which allow lead writers to generate competent content that meets copyright standards while streamlining the overall workflow. They’ve managed to decrease costs while increasing billable amounts, demonstrating the efficiency AI brings to the table.
Moreover, I learned that another agency replaced its entire U.S. development team with developers from Latin America, who now utilize AI tools like ChatGPT to manage communication seamlessly through platforms such as Jira and Slack. These shifts indicate a larger trend where automation is steadily encroaching upon roles once deemed irreplaceable.
While I don’t foresee the wholesale collapse of my industry, the rapid advancement of AI is undeniable. The capabilities of these technologies now include building websites directly from design files, generating necessary code for upsell features, and even evolving traditional SEO practices into more AI-driven methodologies.
As I stand on this precipice of change, I am actively pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. I’m considering a transition back into a more traditional project management role—perhaps in an entirely different sector—as I understand the urgency to rethink my career trajectory. Although the future remains murky, I’m motivated to adapt and explore new avenues, as the eCommerce landscape is irrevocably shifting beneath my feet.
In conclusion, while
