Facing Massive Industry Disruption: Uncertainty About My Future After Near-Complete Market Overhaul
The Future of eCommerce: Navigating an Industry in Transformation
As I reflect on my career journey in the eCommerce sector, I find myself grappling with an unprecedented sense of uncertainty about the future. At 30 years old, I have spent over half my life immersed in this dynamic industry, beginning my adventure at just 14. My professional path has taken me from sales to key leadership positions, including Director of Project Management, Director of Operations, and currently, Director of Partnerships at my agency.
My expertise primarily lies in web development and design, coupled with large-scale SEO and eCommerce marketing initiatives. Throughout my career, I’ve contributed to projects with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million, strategically orchestrating elements like conversion rate optimization, user interface/user experience planning, and upsell strategies.
However, what once felt stable is now shifting dramatically as artificial intelligence (AI) begins to manifest its influence across the industry at an astonishing pace. A recent conversation with a former colleague shed light on this evolution. At the agency where I once worked, the SEO team has dwindled from 25 copywriters to just four since 2021. Remarkably, they are managing to bill $20,000 more per month, leveraging AI to fulfill roles that were previously occupied by junior writers, with lead writers merely adjusting prompts to conform with copyright standards.
Additionally, I’ve witnessed another agency replace their entire U.S.-based development team with talent from Latin America, who now depend heavily on AI tools like ChatGPT for project management communications via platforms such as Jira and Slack.
While I’m not suggesting that my industry is on the verge of collapse, it is undeniably forecasted for significant transformation. With AI technologies already capable of building websites from Figma designs or even basic sketches, it’s evident that traditional roles are evolving. I’ve observed how AI can generate precise code to facilitate upsells without requiring a developer’s intervention. The emergence of Google AI and prompt-driven search is also reshaping the landscape of conventional SEO practices before our very eyes.
This whirlwind of change has left me contemplating my own professional trajectory. As the industry increasingly automates its processes, I’m in the midst of acquiring my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. I’m considering a pivot back into a Head of Project Management or Senior PM role, potentially in a different field altogether. While the path ahead feels murky, one thing is certain: the landscape of eCommerce is becoming extraordinarily complex and unpredictable.
