Facing Industry Disruption: For the First Time in My Life, I’m Uncertain About My Future Five Years Ahead

Navigating the Future of eCommerce: A Personal Reflection on Change and AI

As a 30-year-old professional who has dedicated nearly half of my life to the world of eCommerce, I find myself at a crossroads. Since embarking on my journey in this multifaceted industry at the age of 14, I have grown through various roles—from sales to my current position as Director of Partnerships—culminating in a wealth of experience that now feels increasingly uncertain.

Throughout my career, I have engaged in numerous web development, design projects, and large-scale marketing campaigns, managing budgets that often stretched from $20,000 to well over $1 million. My responsibilities have included crafting conversion rate optimization (CRO) strategies, planning user interfaces and experiences (UI/UX), and developing upsell tactics. The strategic depth of my work has allowed me to contribute significantly to the organizations I’ve collaborated with.

Astonishingly, their SEO department is generating $20,000 more in billable hours each month, thanks largely to the implementation of AI tools that are streamlining tasks that once required a full writing staff. This shift speaks volumes about the potential for automation to disrupt established roles in our industry.

Further compounding this change, another agency I am familiar with replaced its entire U.S. development team with talent from Latin America, utilizing ChatGPT to enhance communication and project management through platforms like Jira and Slack. The implications of these transitions are profound, as AI is not only reducing workforce numbers but also changing the skill sets that employers seek.

While I do not foresee an impending collapse of the eCommerce sector, it is clear that automation and AI are revolutionizing the way we operate. Advanced tools are already capable of creating websites directly from Figma files or even simple sketches, and I’ve witnessed AI generating the precise coding necessary for implementing upsells without the need for a developer’s intervention. Moreover, Google’s advancements in AI and prompt-based search are altering the foundations of traditional SEO in real-time.

As I observe these transformations, the future of my career feels uncertain. I am currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and contemplating a shift towards a more traditional Head of Project Management or Senior Project Manager role—potentially even in a completely different
