Anticipating Near-Total Industry Overhaul: For the First Time, I Can’t Predict My Future in 5 Years
Navigating the Future of E-Commerce in an AI-Driven World
As the landscape of the e-commerce industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace, many professionals are grappling with uncertainty about their future roles. At just 30 years old, I find myself reflecting on a career that began in e-commerce at the age of 14. My journey has led me through a variety of positions, from sales to my current role as the Director of Partnerships at an agency where I have overseen numerous web development, design projects, and extensive marketing campaigns.
The trajectory of my career has been marked by significant achievements, including leading projects with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million. As I navigated through positions like Director of PM and Director of Operations, I have honed my skills in Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO), user interface design, and strategic upselling. However, the advent of artificial intelligence is reshaping the industry in ways that I could not have anticipated.

Recently, however, I learned from a colleague that this team has been reduced to just four writers, while the department now generates $20,000 more in billable hours each month. The rise of AI has allowed for the automation of many routine writing tasks, significantly decreasing the need for junior positions within the industry as lead writers adapt to overseeing AI-generated content.
Additionally, at another agency, the entire U.S. development team was replaced by developers from Latin America, who now utilize tools like ChatGPT to manage communication through platforms such as Jira and Slack. This shift highlights how AI is streamlining workflows and transforming roles that were once considered foundational to the industry.
While I do not believe that e-commerce is on the verge of collapse, it is clear that we are on the cusp of a significant transformation. AI tools are now capable of developing websites directly from design files, and I have witnessed firsthand how AI can produce precise code needed for implementing upsell features without requiring developer input. Furthermore, Google AI and other prompt-based search technologies are redefining traditional SEO practices in real-time.
In light of these changes, I find myself contemplating my own future within the industry. I’m currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and exploring the possibility of transitioning to a Head of Project Management or Senior PM role in a different sector altogether. The uncertainty looms large,
