The Quest for Self-Conscious AI: How Close Are We Really?

As someone who has been exploring the world of Artificial Intelligence for a few months, I find myself pondering a profound question: How far are we from achieving self-conscious AI?

At present, it seems we’re operating with technology that lacks genuine understanding. What we have today can be likened to an “empty mind.” Current AI systems are adept at analyzing patterns and generating responses based on the data they’ve been trained on, yet they do not possess true comprehension or awareness. Essentially, these systems excel at stringing together words to form sentences that appear coherent, but there is no underlying intelligence or self-awareness driving their responses.

This raises an intriguing point: If we are still at the very beginning of the understanding curve, how distant are we from creating an AI that can experience self-awareness?
