In recent months, I came across an intriguing discussion on Reddit that caught my attention. A user noted:

“If you want your site to show up in ChatGPT, optimize for Bing.”

Initially, I dismissed this as another offbeat statement from the internet. However, as I began to explore the idea further, I realized it held more weight than I initially thought.

To break it down, ChatGPT utilizes Bing’s search index to generate its responses. This means that if you achieve a good ranking on Bing, you significantly increase your chances of appearing in responses generated by ChatGPT.

So, what’s the distinction between Google and Bing? Primarily, Bing organizes keywords differently and places a greater emphasis on Human in the Loop (HITL) methodologies.

Curious about this, I embarked on a series of experiments, and here’s what I discovered:

  1. Bing Prefers Specific, High-Intent Queries: Unlike Google, where broad keywords might yield substantial traffic, Bing thrives on targeted queries. For example, the phrase “best CRM for small teams” tends to perform better than the more generic “CRM software.”

  2. The Importance of On-Page SEO: Bing offers significant value to on-page optimization, reminiscent of how Google approached it back in 2015. This means that focusing on your on-page elements can yield favorable results.

  3. Utilization of Schema Markup: I began incorporating FAQ schema into three of my high-intent pages, and to my surprise, I noticed a marked improvement in the visibility of my site in ChatGPT responses within just two days.

  4. Quality Over Quantity in Link Building: In terms of backlinks, relevance holds more weight on Bing compared to merely acquiring links from high Domain Authority sites. For instance, we engaged with WordPress blogs using targeted queries like “site:wordpress.com ‘keyword’,” which resulted in noticeable gains. This contrast became evident when we compared it to a client for whom we obtained links from over 50 high-DA websites without similar success.

I’m sharing these insights because just this morning, I had a meeting with a prospect who mentioned discovering our services through ChatGPT. It was a revelation! Who would have thought one could attract business through AI-driven platforms?
