The Impact of AI on Software Engineering Salaries: A Veteran’s Perspective
As someone who has devoted over 35 years to the field of software engineering, I have witnessed the industry evolve significantly. This career was rewarding enough to allow me early retirement, although the passion for coding still calls me back. Recently, I’ve been engaged in a coding project enhanced by the capabilities of AI, and I am astonished at how much more efficient the process has become. Despite this efficiency, my expertise remains crucial in integrating AI-generated components into a cohesive final product.
From my viewpoint, AI is unlikely to entirely “replace” software engineers. Instead, it will transform the landscape by significantly reducing the demand for both specialized skills and the time investment traditionally needed. This evolution could lead to a substantial decrease in average salaries and lower educational requirements for entering the field. Consequently, software engineering might no longer offer the financial allure it once did. This transformation is not a distant future scenario; it is a forthcoming reality. What are your thoughts on this emerging trend?
