AI is fooling people

The Growing Influence of AI: An Unexpected Encounter

In our rapidly digitalizing world, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has undeniably become a transformative force, influencing various aspects of our lives. However, one of its most profound impacts is its ability to blur the lines between human creativity and machine-generated outputs, sometimes to the point of confusion or deception. A personal experience recently underscored this issue for me, highlighting the need for awareness and understanding.

For over half a century, my family has been an integral part of organizing a cherished traditional arts festival. This event is a haven for families across the United States, maintaining a quaint and low-tech charm, except for the essential stage and camping facilities. With my grandparents actively involved on the board and my father once serving as its president, this festival is more than an event; it’s a family legacy.

Every year, a call for creativity is answered through an art competition to design the festival’s logo. This competition takes form on Facebook, rewarding the selected artist. This year, my grandparents visited us, eager to show off the newly chosen design. It was supposed to embody the festival’s spirit, but to my dismay, it was glaringly apparent that the artwork was generated by AI. The logo showcased a cartoonish guitar missing strings and included a misspelled town name—a clear indication of automated creation.

The individual responsible for the artwork initially claimed a minimal use of AI, crediting their own skills for the majority of the piece. I found myself embroiled in a two-hour discussion, explaining to my technologically-challenged family why this AI-generated logo was unsuitable for our festival. The disconnect was palpable, much of the board struggled to grasp the significance of using AI-generated art for a traditional festival. However, by highlighting the logo’s deficiencies, I was eventually able to persuade them to abandon it.

Later, the so-called artist admitted to solely using AI to generate the design. The board members, although unfamiliar with AI’s intricacies, understood the implications of public perception had they gone ahead with the logo. It’s likely that without that chance family visit, the artwork, complete with its flaws, would have emblazoned festival memorabilia.

This incident illuminated a broader truth: Society is not insulated against AI’s rapid advancement, and many aren’t equipped to recognize or challenge it. As someone who eagerly awaits AI’s potential to reshape our world, I recognize that transparency about its use is crucial. While my family may not be technologically adept, they aren
